Public Comment Period Extended Until April 21, 2008
The Bureau of Land Management announced today (March 20, 2008) that it will accept public comment on the Oil Shale-Tar Sands Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) for an additional 32 days, until Monday, April 21, 2008. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will accept written comments on the Draft Programmatic EIS postmarked by Thursday, March 20, 2008 and electronic (Web) comments received by Thursday, March 20, 2008. Comments received or postmarked after that date will be considered to the extent practicable.
Public meetings on the draft Programmatic EIS are tentatively scheduled for February 2008. Specific locations for the public meetings, as well as other important information about the meetings will be posted under Public Meetings when they become available.

Oil Shale and Tar Sands Programmatic EIS Public Scoping Meetings Held
As part of the scoping phase of the PEIS process, The U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Land Management, (BLM) held public scoping meetings to obtain scoping comments for the PEIS in seven cities in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming in January 2006. There were two meetings on the same day at each location. The first meeting was held from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, and the second meeting was held from 7:00 to 10:00 PM.
A total of 348 persons registered attendance at the 14 public scoping meetings. A number of attendees presented oral comments at the meetings. A scoping summary report covering all comments received, including those provided orally at the scoping meetings, will be published on this Web site when it is available.

The Oil Shale and Tar Sands Programmatic EIS Public Information Center Web site was launched December 13, 2005. This Web site is the online center for public information and involvement in the Oil Shale and Tar Sands Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (Oil Shale and Tar Sands PEIS).
The United States Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will prepare a Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) for oil shale and tar sands resources leasing on lands administered by the BLM in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. The PEIS will amend existing applicable Resource Management Plans to address oil shale and tar sands resources leasing in these three states. This Web site is the online center for public information and involvement in the PEIS process.
